(Ben's dad put forward a very true response to this last proposition-if a person is tortured enough they will only become angrier and cause more damage. So I have a new and better replacement for the death penalty-the offenders arms should be removed. See? No loss. How much damage can a man with no arms do?) My aim is not to cause pain to present offenders, but to reinforce more strongly that crime begats consequence-a man is less likely to steal if he knows that he will lose his finger. And a man is less likely to rape and kill with the thought of slithering through the rest of his wasted life unable to wipe his own ass or tie a shoelace. Then again I am probably wrong. Humans have a skill for becoming de-sensitised over time, of getting used to atrocities(this is how corrupt politicians work society-they know exactly how our simple minds work over their ridiculous descisions-then forget them over time). If these laws of punishment were passed people would very soon accept them. Soon, a man with a branded face would be no rare sight.
